1. About the Off the Page Contributors

Chauncey Mabe grew up in Southwest Virginia, where he fell in love with reading in order to learn more about dinosaurs, little suspecting he'd eventually become one himself. A fiercely proud autodidact, he always says he learned everything school had to...

A new era in the 007 world begins, with Daniel Craig starring as James Bond. The super-spy embarks on his first mission: to win a high-stakes poker tournament so a banker (Mads Mikkelsen) can't use the money to fund terrorism. The film is based on Ian...

8. Movie review: 'Casino Royale'

3½ stars (out of four)
Tribune movie critic
3½ stars (out of four) For a long time now, the James Bond franchise has been operating with a license to overkill. That license has been revoked by "Casino Royale." It doesn't even feel like a Bond film as we have come to expect them, in their numbing,...

14. 'Die Another Day'

Timely -- and as demographically savvy as ever -- James Bond enters his new adventure off the coast of North Korea with some fast and furious surfing designed to show the "XXX" generation that the 007 dude still has the stuff. The waves and silhouetted figures riding the massive curls inspire a shiver of delight along with a tremor of hope that the world's coolest franchise has finally ditched his blockbuster bloat and just maybe the Dry Look in order to power-surf into the new millennium. It's about then, as the waves and our hopes crest, that "Die Another Day" cuts to one of the surfers pulling off his mask to reveal the untroubled face of Pierce Brosnan, whose glazed implacability suggests a man who rarely gets shaken, much less stirred.
