  1. Movie projector: Five new movies open, but 'Expendables' may kick butt again

    Company Town
Hollywood is releasing a family comedy, a romantic comedy, a teen-targeted spoof, a cheesy 3-D thriller, and an African American-targeted comedy this weekend. But instead of heading for the new releases, moviegoers may just stick with the same old action....

  3. The actors: Jason Bateman

Jason Bateman may not be a male model, but he's also not, as he says, a "booger-eating mouth-breather."
Jason Bateman may not be a male model, but he's also not, as he says, a "booger-eating mouth-breather." His above-average looks actually almost cost him the lead role in "The Switch," the romantic comedy opening Aug. 20 in which he stars with Jennifer...

  15. 'Sit Down, Shut Up'

There was reason enough to expect something special from <a href="http://www.fox.com/sitdownshutup/">&ldquo;Sit Down, Shut Up,&rdquo;</a> a new Fox animated sitcom created by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Hurwitz">Mitchell Hurwitz</a> of "Arrested Development" and featuring a cast -- derived mainly from "Arrested Development" and "Saturday Night Live," with Tom "SpongeBob" Kenny bringing the cartoon cred -- that deserves to be called "all-star." But the show that premieres Sunday night, between "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" in the space formerly occupied by "King of the Hill," is weak -- not hopeless, but given the pedigree, heavily disappointing.

  17. 'Hancock's' Jason Bateman enjoys the Hollywood climb

NESTLED IN the hills to the west of the Hollywood sign, Runyon Canyon is a see-and-be-seen hiking circuit, heavy on the unleashed dogs. As a workout, it's a dust-bowl journey of around 45 minutes, during which one sometimes passes -- amid the halter-topped women running fiercely and the Sherpa types strolling with several dogs -- an actor of some repute.

  19. Ensemble Movie Babylon

We're not sure what to think about a movie like "Smokin' Aces." We like the idea of it &mdash; Jason Bateman, Andy Garcia, Ben Affleck, Alicia Keyes, Common, Ray Liotta all playing assassins out to kill a magician and mob informant played by Jeremy Piven &mdash; but we've learned the hard way that ensemble movies are hard to pull off. Back in our middle school days, when we used to rent movies based on the box cover we were always drawn to the ones with a bevy of stars that more often than not included Kevin Kline. Sometimes they were great &mdash; "A Fish Called Wanda" or "I Love You to Death," but most of the time they were major disappointments. After all, it's not easy to keep a sprawling cast of stars in check.

Hancock Sony, $28.96/$34.95; Blu-ray, $39.95 In the summer of "Iron Man" and “The Dark Knight,” the decidedly rattier "Hancock" came off as something of an also-ran, though in its own way, this offbeat, ground-level adventure was every bit as...

  23. Hancock, Obama and the summer of heroes

Sp far this summer, I've had my brain pummeled by <a href="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/summer-sneaks-2008/iron-man"><b>Robert Downey Jr.</b></a> flying around in a techno-suit, <a href="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/summer-sneaks-2008/you-dont-mess-with-the-zohan"><b>Adam Sandler</b></a> as an invincible (and priapic) former Mossad agent, <a href="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/summer-sneaks-2008/get-smart"><b>Steve Carell</b></a> as a nerdy indestructible super spy, <a href="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/summer-sneaks-2008/indiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-crystal-skull"><b>Harrison Ford</b></a> as a Teflon 60-year-old archaeologist, <a href="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/summer-sneaks-2008/incredible-hulk"><b>Edward Norton</b></a> as the incredibly angry green dude -- which I admit I missed but saw the ads. However, I did catch an early screening of Will Smith as a hung-over but still unbeatable superhero. And I still have <a href="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/summer-sneaks-2008/dark-knight"><b>"The Dark Knight"</b></a> and <a href="http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/summer-sneaks-2008/hellboy-2:-the-golden-army"><b>"Hellboy II: The Golden Army"</b></a> to go.
