3. 'Sit Down, Shut Up'

There was reason enough to expect something special from “Sit Down, Shut Up,” a new Fox animated sitcom created by Mitchell Hurwitz of "Arrested Development" and featuring a cast -- derived mainly from "Arrested Development" and "Saturday Night Live," with Tom "SpongeBob" Kenny bringing the cartoon cred -- that deserves to be called "all-star." But the show that premieres Sunday night, between "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" in the space formerly occupied by "King of the Hill," is weak -- not hopeless, but given the pedigree, heavily disappointing.

  5. 'Hancock's' Jason Bateman enjoys the Hollywood climb

NESTLED IN the hills to the west of the Hollywood sign, Runyon Canyon is a see-and-be-seen hiking circuit, heavy on the unleashed dogs. As a workout, it's a dust-bowl journey of around 45 minutes, during which one sometimes passes -- amid the halter-topped women running fiercely and the Sherpa types strolling with several dogs -- an actor of some repute.

  7. Ensemble Movie Babylon

We're not sure what to think about a movie like "Smokin' Aces." We like the idea of it — Jason Bateman, Andy Garcia, Ben Affleck, Alicia Keyes, Common, Ray Liotta all playing assassins out to kill a magician and mob informant played by Jeremy Piven — but we've learned the hard way that ensemble movies are hard to pull off. Back in our middle school days, when we used to rent movies based on the box cover we were always drawn to the ones with a bevy of stars that more often than not included Kevin Kline. Sometimes they were great — "A Fish Called Wanda" or "I Love You to Death," but most of the time they were major disappointments. After all, it's not easy to keep a sprawling cast of stars in check.

Hancock Sony, $28.96/$34.95; Blu-ray, $39.95 In the summer of "Iron Man" and “The Dark Knight,” the decidedly rattier "Hancock" came off as something of an also-ran, though in its own way, this offbeat, ground-level adventure was every bit as...

  11. Hancock, Obama and the summer of heroes

Sp far this summer, I've had my brain pummeled by Robert Downey Jr. flying around in a techno-suit, Adam Sandler as an invincible (and priapic) former Mossad agent, Steve Carell as a nerdy indestructible super spy, Harrison Ford as a Teflon 60-year-old archaeologist, Edward Norton as the incredibly angry green dude -- which I admit I missed but saw the ads. However, I did catch an early screening of Will Smith as a hung-over but still unbeatable superhero. And I still have "The Dark Knight" and "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" to go.
