"I'M LUCKY Horace. I've always been lucky. I'll be lucky again." So declared Lillian Hellman's ruthless anti-heroine Regina Giddens in "The Little Foxes." She announces this to her critically ill husband, after he has foiled her crooked plans to become...

7. Ben Affleck's mission accomplished in 'Argo' ★★★ 1/2

The propulsive hostage thriller "Argo," the third feature directed by Ben Affleck, just plain works. It's heartening to encounter a film, based on fact but happy to include all sorts of exciting fictions to amp up the suspense, whose entertainment intentions are clear. The execution is clean, sharp and rock-solid. It's as apolitical as a political crisis story set in Iran can get. But "the first rule in any deception operation is to understand who your audience is."

I can just see the clichés the critics will be writing about this.

23. For film fest, is 'good enough' good enough?

My own feelings about the Chicago festival, the 48th edition of which concluded Thursday, are necessarily shaped by individual taste as well as equally subjective notions of relevance. Does the event matter? Is it as vital as it could be, should be? Tough queries, tougher to answer.
Is the Chicago International Film Festival good, good enough or not quite that? This is the question. This is the question to be asked of any festival, every perennial cultural mainstay in every city. It's the way to keep us all honest, whatever dog we...

1. You've got a pitch meeting — now what?

As I learned in the fourth grade when my first crush told me oh-so eloquently to "Get lost, creepo!," not everything you go after in life will work out as planned. Now, at the ripe, old age of 28, nothing has reminded me of that schoolyard lesson more than when I recently pitched my first show to a TV network.

3. Brick-and-mortar treasures in Tinseltown

Like an old movie set, original Hollywood was dismantled ages ago, leaving what appears to be scant trace of its hallowed roots: The Hollywood Hotel (where Louis B. Mayer and a long list of silent movie stars stayed). The Hollywood Brown Derby (where Clark Gable reportedly proposed to Carole Lombard in booth No. 5). The Hollywood Canteen (where celebrity volunteers waited on tables and the millionth WWII serviceman guest got a kiss from Betty Grable).
