5. Venice is her favorite; all of Italy is delicious

Ever since her 1995 hit single "One of Us," Joan Osborne has remained a strong presence in the music world, collaborating with members of the Grateful Dead, participating in the Lilith Fair concerts and appearing in the documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown." The 47-year-old singer-songwriter now is playing dates nationwide to support her latest CD, "Little Wild One." "I try to take care of myself on the road, whether I'm touring or traveling for pleasure," Osborne said. "Even though I'm a chick singer in a rock band, I don't smoke or drink. Lately I've gotten into raw food, which is not as unappetizing as it sounds." Osborne, born and raised in a suburb of Louisville, loves to travel and recommends numerous hotels and restaurants.

11. Living up to their legends

Alexi Murdoch, a long-haired, bearded singer-songwriter, stands on the Troubadour stage, picking a moody scale on his guitar and singing an expressive, introspective lyric. The crowd, which includes press, record label reps and movie soundtrack supervisors, quiets down and tunes in to his dusky voice. It's the classic Troubadour tableau, as inscribed in the early '70s, when it was arguably the most famous nightclub in the world.

Special to the Tribune
In an era when renewable resources are increasingly important, it's nice to know that pop music seems endlessly recyclable. That's apparent in today's hippest new sound, Electroclash. Less a revolution than a reupholstering, Electroclash merges the chilly...
