Woodward has raised three daughters, been an advocate for liberal politics and is a frequent visitor to the Canyon Ranch spa in the Berkshires. In 2001, she took on the role of artistic director with Anne Keefe as associate artistic director. Woodward revived the theater -- with the help of her friends and husband. He helped score one of the theater's biggest critical and financial successes, playing the Stage Manager in a production of "Our Town'' first in Westport in 2002, before moving it to Broadway (where it earned $1 million for the theater), and later as a PBS production. In 2005, with the playhouse firmly established, Woodward stepped down, remaining as artistic director emeritus.
