11. Music review: Joshua Bell at the Hollywood Bowl

Bramwell Tovey conducted "Petrushka" at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night. But before he did, the principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for its summer concerts explained that Stravinsky kills off the eponymous puppet in his 1911 ballet by having a percussionist throw a tambourine down on a wooden table. Tovey said he had instructed a camera to pan to said tambourine and table at the appropriate moment so everyone would see them on the Bowl's video screens.

  13. Composer Avner Dorman spices things up

A rising young composer from the U.S., Europe or even the Far East isn't necessarily a newsmaker. But how about a hot new composer from Israel? That's a rare occurrence sure to raise eyebrows among the classical cognoscenti.

  15. (Violin) string theory at the Bowl

A remarkable run of major monuments in the classical-Romantic violin repertoire began in L.A. a few weeks ago when Joshua Bell played Bruch's First Concerto. It signaled the start of what amounts to a crash course in the history of the 19th century violin concerto at the Hollywood Bowl (with a 20th century American classic thrown in).

  23. Ferris Chorale celebrates 40 years of service to living composers

To be around long enough to celebrate one's 40th birthday must seem like an impossible dream for many a fledgling Chicago music group. For the William Ferris Chorale, which wraps up its 40th anniversary season this weekend with concerts in Chicago and LaGrange, it is a bench mark in a singular saga of glory, decline and rebirth.
