1. Predictions: Golden Globes 2013--movies

No matter who wins or loses Sunday, the 2013 Golden Globes ceremony obviously will be awesome because Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting. Really: That should be enough to make even the most awards show-averse movie/TV fans tune in.

3. 'The Sessions' based on true story

Given that it's based on the true story of a man with polio who spends most of his time in an iron lung, “The Sessions” is not as painfully heavy-handed as it might sound. And given that it's about this man's nervous attempts to lose his virginity at age 38, it's also not as obnoxiously wacky as it might sound.

Variety
Independent film Goliaths strode tall at Tuesday's nominations for the 28th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, but a few Davids were still able to slingshot their way to success. "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Silver Linings Playbook" led the way with five...

9. Melissa Leo on Helen Hunt in 'The Sessions': SAG Preview: Actors on Actors - Leo on Hunt

Variety
Helen Hunt has always stuck me as a smart actor. I loved her on TV years ago on "Mad About You," and in all her film roles over the years she brings a refreshing new look at women of our times. But, in "The Sessions," Helen reinvents herself as an actor....

11. Sarah Paulson on John Hawkes in 'The Sessions': SAG Preview: Actors on Actors - Paulson on Hawkes

Variety
John Hawkes is the greatest acting partner I've never had. I've been in three different projects with him, but have actually never had the pleasure of sharing any scenes with him. I found myself sneaking around all three of those sets asking those who did...

13. 3 Oscar-worthy performances

I'm pretty sure we can account for three of the best-male-actor nominees when the Academy Awards lists come out on Jan. 10. I've just seen a trio of excellent performances: Denzel Washington in "Flight," Daniel Day-Lewis in "Lincoln" and John Hawkes in...

17. Film review: This Abe is hard to top

The trailers and TV ads for "Lincoln" — with their wall-to-wall music, stately proclamations and reverent tone — suggest an unrestrained Steven Spielberg, fully indulging his worst tendencies. They won't win any truth-in-advertising awards either — a good thing, since what we get is far better than they lead you to expect.

19. 'Lincoln': A political animal of a different kind ★★★★

"Lincoln" is a grave and surprisingly subtle magic trick, conjuring the past and an almost ridiculously impressive figure in ways that transcend art direction and the right stovepipe hat. Director Steven Spielberg's latest combines the most commonly shared notions we have of our 16th U.S. president — the folksy deliberation, the spindly gait, the all-seeing eye on the prize of history remade — with the behavior, idiosyncrasies and contradictions of an actual human being. It blends cinematic Americana with something grubbier and more interesting than Americana, and it does not look, act or behave like the usual perception of a Spielberg epic. It is smaller and quieter than that.

21. 'The Sessions' tells tale of the virgin's diary ★★★ 1/2

In 1990 the writer Mark O'Brien contributed an article for the literary magazine The Sun called "On Seeing a Sex Surrogate." A survivor of childhood polio, the substantially disabled O'Brien spent much of his sleeping and waking hours confined to an iron lung. Interviewing other disabled people for an earlier assignment, he realized his own sexual life — so dormant for so long — needn't stay that way forever. "Being disabled myself, but also being a virgin, I envied these people ferociously," he wrote in the 1990 piece.
