  9. Opening day at Dodger Stadium is an eye-opener

This is what my life's come to: I'm touring Dodger Stadium with a landscape architect by the name of Mia Lehrer, an affable arborist who in the off-season planted 100 trees here, 3,000 plants, blah-blah-blah, and she notes that the ballpark itself — the superstructure, the chassis — is shaped much like a catcher's mitt.

  11. The Oscars telecast's rocky road

Last night's Oscars were like an emotional roller-coaster at a terrible amusement park--beginning wth Seth MacFarlane's as-bad-as-feared monologue, the show rarely rose above painful and hit few peaks. Allow us to relive some of the night's best and worst moments, not necessarily in that order.

Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale are a couple of Nashville mavericks who’ve written, sang, played on or produced some of the best records of the last 25 years. They’re best friends who live just a few blocks from each other in Nashville, and yet they’ve never made an album together – until now.

  19. 'Ted': Crude comedy doesn't quite bear up ✭✭

Like "The Hangover"and its sequel, "Ted"is a bully of a comedy but a bully with just enough calculated heart to make it a hit. It plays like a movie tryout for a TV series, specifically a Seth MacFarlane series, which means a high quotient of startlingly crude ethnic and cultural stereotypes leavened by a sincere appreciation for American popular music of another era.
