1. 'Jack the Giant Slayer' director faced some towering challenges

When screenwriter Darren Lemke first proposed the idea of contemporizing the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale with CG technology, it was 2005. Tim Burton had not yet jumped into the rabbit hole with "Alice in Wonderland." Amanda Seyfried had yet to don the cape for "Red Riding Hood." Snow White had no Huntsman.

  3. Marcy and Zina — with luck, you'll know their names soon

NEW YORK — In the annals of showbiz, the chance encounter between lyricist Marcy Heisler and composer Zina Goldrich 21 years ago may not rank with Rodgers and Hammerstein's first meeting or Lerner linking up with Loewe. But it could prove to be a memorable moment for American musical theater.

  15. Richard M. Walden, Operation USA's charity buccaneer

Almost on impulse, almost 35 years ago, Richard M. Walden and a friend rounded up six tons of relief supplies and a jet to ferry them to Vietnamese boat people in Malaysia. Thus was Operation California — now Operation USA — born. A Times headline soon called him the "charity buccaneer," a red-tape-slashing contrarian who fretted about the "international web of neglect," and who still has sharp words for relief efforts unmet and relief agencies that don't measure up. He has steadfast celebrity supporters, like Julie Andrews, but the advent of social media that let anyone text a few bucks to Lady Gaga's favorite charity in the middle of a concert has made things harder for brick-and-mortar charities like Operation USA. Walden soldiers on, boldly going where too many charity-come-latelies can only try to go.

  17. SAG Awards 2013: Dick Van Dyke honored for life achievement

It was an emotional, nostalgic moment at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last year when Dick Van Dyke gave Mary Tyler Moore the guild's 48th Life Achievement Award. The two veterans, who had come to TV fame playing Rob and Laura Petrie on the landmark 1961-66 CBS sitcom "The Dick Van Dyke Show," reunited on stage.

  19. Vienna Philharmonic attacked for past Nazi ties, being too white

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has garnered a loyal television audience around the world with its annual New Year's concert broadcasts, which air in the U.S. on PBS. But this New Year's celebration was somewhat marred by attacks made on the orchestra concerning its past sympathies to the Nazi party.
