  1. 'Hollywoodland'

"Hollywoodland," a new film about the mythmaking ability of the entertainment industry in a bygone era, plays a bit like an HBO biopic, which sounds like an insult, but lumping Allen Coulter's first feature in with an "RKO 281" or "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" isn't so bad.

As has been previously entered into evidence, I watch TV like it's my job.
    Zap2It.com
As has been previously entered into evidence, I watch TV like it's my job. But sometimes I like to think about what shows would I absolutely watch each week -- even if I didn't have to. That's how I came up with my personal Top 10 TV shows of 2006. It...

  5. 'Scary Movie 2'

    Times Staff Writer
There's been a lot of talk recently about how gross-out comedies are on the wane, but Keenen Ivory Wayans clearly has paid no attention. His "Scary Movie 2" opens with a send-up of "The Exorcist" featuring James Woods that sets the tone for the film...

  7. Splendor

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Friday October 1, 1999      "Splendor" marks a new direction for filmmaker Gregg Araki, who had pretty much explored all he could about Gen X sex, drugs and despair in such provocative movies as "Nowhere," "The Doom Generation," "Totally F***ed Up" and...

  9. 'Dog Park'

    Times Staff Writer
If the film "Dog Park" were the only guide to Toronto, one might easily conclude that only 10 people live there and that most of them tend toward obtuse.      Written and directed by one-time Kid in the Hall Bruce McCulloch, "Dog Park" has the outward...

  11. Let the shows begin

By all appearances, the broadcast television networks finally got the message that audiences are hungry for original programming even during summer months. What's more, they've learned to do it with relatively inexpensive programming. Just look at the...

  15. Movie review: 'XX/XY'

    Chicago Tribune Staff Writer
3 stars (out of 4) One of the cruel ironies of adolescence is that we fall in love the hardest when we are least equipped to deal with it. Perhaps that's why we fall so hard. Whether consciously or not, this theme permeates the core of "XX/XY," writer/...

  17. 'XX/XY'

The independent drama "XX/XY" opens with the sort of hot stuff for which Penthouse Forum and French movies were invented. After crashing a party, a fledgling animator named Coles (Mark Ruffalo) lands in bed with two of Sarah Lawrence's finest. The object of his lust is Sam (Maya Stange), one of those girls with melting eyes whom men pursue like heat-seeking missiles, while the object of his opportunism is her best friend, the querulous Thea (Kathleen Robertson). The three fall into bed only to have their erotic expectations dashed. One of the girls starts laughing and the other starts crying as Coles looks on, bewildered and disappointed.

  21. Nowhere

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Friday May 9, 1997      As the credits unroll for the high-energy "Nowhere," Gregg Araki's most ambitious movie to date, we hear the voice of Dark (James Duval) observe, "L.A. is like nowhere. Everybody who lives here is lost." This most sweeping--and...
