I know, I know, this is really just a blatant rip-off of the WOMEN IN ART viral video. But it's still really good. Below are the women depicted in the video. Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Gloria Swanson, Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer, Ruth Chatterton,...

  7. Spying on the stars

Many people left the 78th Academy Awards with Oscars, but Lauren Bacall was probably the only one who left with a penguin. The actress happened to be standing backstage right when "March of the Penguins" won best documentary. As the filmmakers exited the stage, they were so thrilled to encounter Bacall, they handed her one of the stuffed penguins they had brought onstage.

  11. Oscars' best — and worst

They saved the best, or at least the biggest surprise, for last. But that doesn't mean there wasn't plenty to love (or hate or feel completely indifferent about) at the 78th Academy Awards. Without further ado, here are the nominees for the Oscar telecast's most watercooler-worthy moments . . .

As a follow-up to the Oscar-winning "Spirited Away," Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" boasts the same excellent animation, subtle humor and imaginative vision. Its biggest problem, however, is the director's ambitious, intuitive storytelling, which...

  17. 'Manderlay'

In 2003's "Dogville," the first installment in Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier's United States trilogy, the town philosopher Tom Edison tries to explain his penchant for inflicting long public lectures on his fellow citizens. "I think there's a lot this country's forgotten," he says. "I just try to refresh folks' memories by way of illustration." In "Manderlay," the haughty sequel to "Dogville," Von Trier once again comes off like Tom with a hand-held camera — unafraid to preach, and determined to thrust a less than forgiving mirror into the face of America — but this time he's forgotten about the power of illustration. Where it took "Dogville" half of its running time to reveal itself as a finger-wagging sermon on the violent lie of small-town American idealism, "Manderlay" is pompously didactic from the first of its 133 long minutes — a harsh and endlessly schematic morality tale in which diatribe is mistaken for story.

  19. The Grill on the Alley: A chophouse champ

As my friends and I walk toward the entrance of the Grill on the Alley in Beverly Hills — yes, it really is off an alley — two couples push open the door, still deep in conversation. They're chatting about the grandchildren, about the last vacation they took together, about the meal they just shared. They're not tourists for sure, but regulars. For anybody who has a thing for classic American chophouses, the Grill on the Alley is a habit.
