A rarely explored sociopolitical context that bristles with racial tension lends raw vitality to coming-of-ager "Shopping," a rough-hewn but confident first feature from New Zealand duo Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland. Following a mixed-race teenager...

8. VOD Spotlight: Dominic Cooper with a challenging, multi-role performance in “The Devil’s Double”

Channel Guide Magazine
The Devil's Double began as an astonishing autobiographical tale of the same name, written by Latif Yahia, who was ripped from his family and forced to become the fiday (which roughly translates to “bullet catcher”) for Saddam Hussein's...

10. This Afternoon’s screening: ‘The Devil’s Double’

Frankly My Dear - Orlando Sentinel
This tale of a man ensnared in the Saddam Hussein family and regime because of his resemblance to a hated Son of Hussein intrigues me. “The Devil's Double” stars Dominic Cooper (“An Education”) and Ludivine Sagnier. I hadn't...

18. Movie review: 'Next'

1½ stars (out of four)
Tribune movie critic
1½ stars (out of four) In "Next," the most dunderheaded film ever made from a Philip K. Dick story, Nicolas Cage plays a telepathic fellow who can see two minutes into the future. This quirk allows him to dodge sniper bullets or simply predict the next...

20. 'Next'

When we first see Cris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) in "Next," a confusing new thriller directed by Lee Tamahori, he's sitting alone in a diner sipping a martini and looking strikingly like Richard E. Grant after a terrible night's sleep. Cris, we soon learn, is a sad-sack Las Vegas magician whose rather astounding psychic abilities (he has the gift of being able see what happens to him two minutes in advance) have failed to attract much of a paying audience. Consequently, he's reduced to supplementing his income at slot machines and card tables — a talent that has, not surprisingly, attracted the attention of casino security and a federal agent named Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore).
