7. Fast-Paised review: Heart of the Game'

Ludacris narrates this documentary about former tax professor Bill Resler and the high-school-girls' basketball team he coaches in Seattle. Big question: Can this high-school-basketball documentary offer anything "Hoop Dreams" didn't? Skip it: People...

3½ stars (out of four) Some documentarians have all the luck. They start with a rich subject -- two, if fortune favors those behind the camera. They follow the subjects around for several years. And they end up with a hell of a story. "The Heart of...

11. Movie review: 'Hustle and Flow'

Tribune staff reporter
3 stars (out of four) By now, the story behind "Hustle & Flow" is more famous than its plot. Scouting locations for another shoestring movie, Memphis director Craig Brewer, husband of a one-time erotic dancer, met his muse in a street hustler pimping...

13. 'Hustle & Flow'

"Hustle & Flow" abounds with all the ingredients of a terrific popular entertainment. Writer-director Craig Brewer first of all cares deeply for his characters, with the result that each one emerges as a distinctive, involving individual, and this care extends from the film's casting down to such details as the gold teeth sported by one of its stars. Wrenching in its raw emotions, hilarious in its earthy humor yet subtle in myriad ways, "Hustle & Flow" catches life in a warm embrace, unafraid of sentiment but not looking away from some of the harsher realities of everyday existence. It's safe to say it's not like any other movie about a black pimp.

They call it the arrivals area, but the vast red carpet that covered the asphalt intersection of Hollywood and Highland during the 78th Annual Academy Awards could just as easily be thought of as the ultimate departure site — step on its magical weave and say goodbye to the real world.

19. Movie review: 'Crash'

Tribune movie critic
Writer-director Paul Haggis' "Crash" starts like a tinderbox suddenly aflame, when two deceptively collegiate-looking African-American guys (Larenz Tate and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges), ambling through an upper-middle-class L.A. neighborhood and joking...

21. 'The Heart of the Game'

Bill Resler, an exuberant University of Washington tax law professor turned girls' high school basketball coach, would have been a good subject for a documentary all on his own. That a 14-year-old phenom named Darnellia Russell walked into his gym one day is one of those fortuitous twists that makes for a terrific documentary.
