1. 'John Carter' review: A slightly better mix of cowboys and aliens than "Cowboys and Aliens"

**1/2 (out of four)
**1/2 (out of four) Like that other long-haired, bare-chested hero with the initials J.C., John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) arrives just in time to calm heated alien tempers and save Mars from laser-powered destruction. OK, maybe the biblical allegory only...

3. John Carter

It’s strange that over the last week I’ve been hearing from friends that bought their Comic Con tickets or ones that got shut out while trying. It’s that crowd that has been waiting for the adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs character John Carter (would it have killed them to call the movie John Carter From Mars?). The Disney folks invested $250 million into this. Yikes.

5. Film review: Sci-fi flick 'John Carter' fails be be out-of-this world

I feel sorry for Mars. It's been at the center of so many bad movies over the past decade or so. 2000 saw a pair of immense disappointments in "Mission to Mars" and "Red Planet." There was an animated flop last year called "Mars Needs Moms." It was also the setting for the most boring parts of "Watchmen." Now it's the setting for "John Carter" a film whose box office performance is already a punchline.

11. Review: 'The Lake House'

Zap2It.com
The characters played by Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock in "The Lake House" are meant to be together, not that you'd know that from the intellectually strained romantic fantasy in which they're currently trapped. No, you have to remember that Reeves...

13. Let the shows begin

By all appearances, the broadcast television networks finally got the message that audiences are hungry for original programming even during summer months. What's more, they've learned to do it with relatively inexpensive programming. Just look at the...

15. 'The Merchant of Venice'

Michael Radford's splendid film of "The Merchant of Venice" is so somber — and rightly so — for so much of the time that it's hard to remember it is one of Shakespeare's comedies, indeed regarded as one of his greatest. Radford, best known for the hugely successful "Il Postino," takes a subtle approach that reveals how charged with ambiguity the play is, which makes this "Merchant" emerge as remarkably immediate and contemporary without ever seeming to strain for this effect.

17. Movie review: 'The Merchant of Venice'

TRIBUNE ARTS CRITIC
3 stars (out of 4) William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" is often labeled one of his problem plays, a comedy with a dark, serious side and thoughtful layers of sociological analysis. For modern audiences, despite its beautiful poetry,...
