1. Your Sister's Sister

Mark Duplass usually does his own mumblecore pictures, but in writer/director Lynn Shelton’s little film, he’s struggling with the loss of his brother and a relationship that went south. His best friend is played by Emily Blunt, who is often blunt with him when it comes to what he should say and do. And what she tells him to do is go to an island in the Pacific Northwest so he can clear his head, read, and ride a bike around. Nobody expected her sister, played by Rosemarie Dewitt, to be hanging around. She recently got out of a seven-year relationship with another woman. They have a night of drinking and sex, and Blunt decides to show up the next morning (I figured a spoiler alert wasn’t needed, as they showed these things in the commercials).

  3. 'Safety Not Guaranteed': Departing cynicism for a trip taken on faith ✭✭✭

Sardonic like its heroine but, at heart, a sweetie, the fetching new comedy "Safety Not Guaranteed"came through the Sundance Film Festival where it won the screenwriting award. The film's based on a classified ad that ran in Backwoods Home magazine in the 1990s and then, years later, thanks to the internets, acquired a second, viral life for itself. "WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. ... You'll get paid after we get back."

  5. A night to remember, forget for an odd couple in 'Your Sister's Sister' ✭✭ 1/2

Truly, madly, deeply affable Mark Duplass has officially blown up real good. The filmmaker and increasingly busy actor has two new movies out, the mainstream-y festival successes "Safety Not Guaranteed" and writer-director Lynn Shelton's "Your Sister's Sister."

  7. Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline can't save messy 'Darling Companion' ✭ 1/2

Like Freeway, the lovable stray dog at the center of this very teary comedy, "Darling Companion"has lost its way. Even the marquee ensemble anchored by Diane Keaton, Dianne Wiest, Kevin Kline and Richard Jenkins is not enough to rescue this motley mutt of a movie.

    ** (out of four)
