  1. Mark Binelli on Detroit, Los Angeles, and our urban future

Mark Binelli is a novelist, Rolling Stone journalist and native Michigander. Born and raised near Detroit, he returned to the city to write "<a href="http://www.markbinelli.com/">Detroit City is the Place To Be: The Afterlife of An American Metropolis</a>." The book explores the many desolate blocks and surprising points of inspiration and revival in a city that is the most extreme example of America's lost industrial heritage. He'll be coming to the L.A. Times <a href="http://events.latimes.com/festivalofbooks/">Festival of Books</a> taking place at USC on April 20-21. Binelli answered our questions by email.

  5. David Roberts in Council District 9

The 9th Council District in South Los Angeles suffers from a toxic combination of entrenched poverty, blight, high unemployment and lagging job skills. With its current representative, Councilwoman Jan Perry, termed out and running for mayor, it is seeking a replacement who can improve the district's lot on a shoestring budget. Of the seven candidates in the field, the one who stands out as having the most thoughtful and achievable program to meet those challenges is David Roberts.

  7. In L.A.'s Council District 9 race, the money flows to Curren Price

It's easy to understand why special interests are pouring dollars into the mayor's race in Los Angeles -- the mayor is the most powerful official in the second-largest city in America. What's less intuitive is why they're spending so much in the race for the City Council's 9th District, the city's poorest.

  9. PGA Tour takes stand against 'belly putter' ban

The U.S. Golf Assn. announced on Nov. 28 that it would consider prohibiting players from using "belly putters," which are putters that are pressed against the chest or stomach to help keep the club stable. There was a lot of teeth-gnashing on the PGA Tour, because three of the last five major champions used belly putters.
