Structured in three parts, "Naqoyqatsi" references M.C. Esher's haunting, terrifying drawing "The Tower of Babel," with images of athletes (like the great American sprinter Maurice Greene), gymnasts and swimmers, symmetrically aligned with their aesthetically "drawn" mechanized bodies. The final part is crafted from appropriated and found images of commercials, military aviation and technical weaponry that asks more oblique, philosophical questions about man's capacity for destruction and abuse. Graced by the plaintive cello solos of Yo-Yo Ma, Glass' music has a spare beauty.
