  1. A light touch with 'A Dangerous Method'

"A Dangerous Method," the intellectually stimulating look at the formative days of psychoanalysis, presents Viggo Mortensen in a transformative performance as Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender as his restrained protégé and rival, Carl Jung, and a bold Keira Knightley as the patient-turned-practitioner who came between them. But it was almost a Julia Roberts movie.

  3. Critic's Notebook: When going from stage to screen, things change in between

The art of adaptation, as the rash of movies derived from plays this season attests, is never easy. The best artistic looters of all time — Shakespeare, the Greek tragedians — recognized that independent vision is everything. Borrowing didn't inhibit them in least. Their goal, of course, wasn't to duplicate but to create something autonomous. Heck, Shakespeare wasn't beyond taking a freehand with history itself.

  5. The Gold Standard: Oscar forecast

If a critically championed movie earns Oscar nominations for art direction, editing, score, makeup and sound, could all that support translate into a best picture nod as well?

  7. The Rising Star: Andrea Riseborough ascends in 'W.E.'

Madonna may be the most famous name associated with "W.E.," the romantic drama she directed that premiered at the Venice Film Festival in late summer. But the woman everyone could be talking about after the film comes out on Dec. 9 is someone rather different: Andrea Riseborough, a 30-year-old British actress who steals the show.

  9. Born on Broadway isn't a sure pedigree

This fall, theater fans may be in for a little déjà vu: "Carnage," "Ides of March," "A Dangerous Method" and "War Horse" are all films, opening from October through December, that have been adapted from plays. All are also popping up with early buzz, making for an exciting Academy Award season for filmmakers and playwrights alike.

  13. 'Dangerous Method' a nuanced Freudian trip – 3 1/2 stars

The doctor-patient relationship is a sure way to attract an audience's prurient interest, as long as proper ethical boundaries are ignored. This brings us to a movie by and for grown-ups with actual attention spans: "A Dangerous Method."

  15. Reaction: 2012 Oscar nominations

    Extremely foolish and incredibly upsetting.
Extremely foolish and incredibly upsetting. That's my diagnosis of the surprising inclusion of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,"  one of the year's worst films, in both the Best Picture race and the Supporting Actor category (Max Von Sydow). BTW: In...

  23. Filmmaker's choice

The holiday movie season is a crowded beast. So we asked filmmaker Hilton Carter, a MICA grad who now lives in Los Angeles, to give us his picks for what he can't wait to see. Carter, 31, whose dark short film "Moth" aired earlier this year on HBO, cut his teeth directing music videos for the likes of Blaqstarr and E Major. His latest project, heist comedy "One Last Run," will tentatively begin filming in Baltimore in mid-December (read more about the project and contribute on kickstarter.com). Here, Carter shares what he calls his "top five fils to finish the year." Shockingly, his list does not include "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked."
