5. Oscars 2013: 'Argo' generates most heat, but can 'Lincoln' catch it?

With the Oscars finally upon us Sunday, it's do-or-die for the movies ranked in the L.A. Times Data Desk's HeatMeter, which tallies points at events throughout the season to gauge the overall traction of people and films. With Ben Affleck's "Argo" piling up the wins, it's taken the lead in the overall film race (which incorporates all wins for a movie, and for everyone from directors to actors to cinematographers).

7. The literary Oscar quiz

During the Oscars on Sunday, there will be lots of glamour, gold and jewels but very few books. Yet before the stars, the lights, the effects and the costumes, there were words. Here's a quiz about this year's Oscar nominees, from a bookish point of view.

9. Shia LeBeouf tweets about backstage drama with Alec Baldwin

Mix two actors with reputations for passion and stormy personalities and it's not surprising things did not turn out as planned for an upcoming Broadway production of "Orphans" that was to have starred Shia LeBeouf and Alec Baldwin.

11. Oscar best-song nominee J. Ralph: 'It's outrageous'

This time of year it’s common to hear many people saying, “It’s an honor just to be nominated.” But the comment sounds pretty convincing coming from Oscar-nominated film composer J. Ralph, considering the odds he beat in being recognized for his song “Before My Time.”

13. No snitching at the box office! Will Netflix go for an Emmy?

After the coffee. Before making my Oscar picks.
After the coffee. Before making my Oscar picks. The Skinny: I'm through three episodes of the Netflix drama "House of Cards" and I have to say, so far it's not changing my life. I'll keep going only because I'm trying to avoid having to watch "Downton...

15. Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper shine at 'Silver Linings' party

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence seemed to be all smiles Wednesday night at a pre-Oscars party sponsored by Vanity Fair, Barneys New York and the Weinstein Co. in honor of "Silver Linings Playbook" and in support of the Glenholme School, a boarding school for special-needs students. Film director David O. Russell has said his work on the film was inspired by his experiences with his own son Matthew, who is a student at the school and who was also a guest at the party. The event was one of Vanity Fair's Campaign Hollywood week-long series of charitable events leading up to the Oscars. Lawrence wore an asymmetrical, black and white Roland Mouret dress for the occasion. [Pop Sugar]

With the Oscars telecast airing on Sunday, Hollywood is preparing for the biggest weekend of the year. There won't be as much to celebrate at the box office, however, as two new films are expected to have lackluster debuts.

"Argo" heads into Sunday's Oscars with the wind at its back, but Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" has the most nominations of any film -- a dozen. Will Ben Affleck's 1970s Iran drama make it a sweep, or are there some surprises in order?

23. If only there were an Academy Award for best stunt hand

In one episode of "Seinfeld," hapless George Costanza was hired as a stunt hand for a movie. Predictably, things went awry and poor George's hand never made a cinematic debut. In the days leading up to the 2013 Academy Awards ceremony, my own hand fared far better performing a tiny but stellar role in a documentary about the great Washington Post editorial cartoonist, Herblock.
