1. Movie review: 'Perfume: The Story of a Murderer'

2 stars (out of four)
Tribune movie critic
2 stars (out of four) A film can reek equally of fine craftsmanship and piping-hot dung, and the proof's in "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer." Beautifully appointed 18th Century serial-killer trash, it is based on the 1985 international bestseller by...

3. Review: 'Perfume'

Published in 1985, Patrick Suskind's novel "Perfume: The
Story of a Murderer" was the unaccountably compelling story of a boy
born into the smelliest time and place in history (Paris, 1783,
naturally) with a superhuman olfactory sense but no personal scent.

5. Movie review: 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'

Tribune movie critic
3½ stars (out of four) Unlike Peter Pan, that other magical airborne boy of British literature and film, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter just keeps growing up. So do the Potter movies, in size, in ambition and in visual splendor — and with increasingly...

Sentinel Movie Critic
Sure, you know your muggles from your Malfoys, maybe even your McGonagalls from your Mad-Eye Moodys. You remember when Michael Gambon replaced Richard Harris as Dumbledore. You've read the six books and seen the five movies, at least by this weekend...

11. 'Order of the Phoenix' proves daunting, delightful for screenwriter

It could be the best screenwriting job in Hollywood, or the most
frightening.
Sentinel Movie Critic
It could be the best screenwriting job in Hollywood, or the most frightening. What writer wouldn't want the power and prestige and paycheck of a Harry Potter screen adaptation on his or her credits? But it has to be scary, too. With Harry Potter and the...

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is the darkest of the Harry Potter films, and the briefest.
Zap2It.com
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is the darkest of the Harry Potter films, and the briefest. It features more yummy turns by the cream of British character actors, with Imelda Staunton and Helena Bonham Carter as plum new additions to the...

15. Movie Review: Traitor - 4 stars out of 5

Traitor is a solid, gripping, only occasionally preachy thriller built around the War on Terror. Ripped-from-the-headlines realism, top-drawer performances by Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce, a dandy "ticking clock" story structure and a vast catalog of terrorist modus operandi make this as harrowing as it is timely.

17. 'Snow Cake'

With his velvety baritone and his sour puss (you half expect him to leave a trail of lemon husks, sucked dry, in his wake), Alan Rickman is the ideal actor to play a very particular kind of brooder — fierce but harmless, in pain but blessed with a high threshold for it. In Marc Evans' "Snow Cake," sensitively directed from a witty, personal screenplay by Angela Pell, Rickman plays Alex Hughes, a mysterious Englishman making his way across Canada having been recently released from prison, where he landed after killing someone. Whatever the circumstances of the crime, he doesn't look like the type. Eventually it's revealed that he's not — though he does seem to attract the kinds of repeat experiences that border on symbolism.

Tribune movie reporter
