3. Review: 'Milk'

It was partly an accident of history that made Harvey Milk the first openly gay man elected to major public office in this country, so it's fitting that yet another accident of history has made "Milk," the earnest biopic about the man, more involving than it would otherwise be.

  5. 'Milk' advisor Cleve Jones is, in a way, just paying it forward

For Cleve Jones, gay rights activist, initiator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and historical consultant on director Gus Van Sant’s new drama, “

"Everything that I've done, everything I've accomplished, everything I survived, so much of it really just goes back to meeting Harvey Milk on the corner of Castro and 18th," said Jones. "I think of that every day."

  7. Kerouac opus 'On the Road' hits just enough beats ★★★

An eternal fountain of adolescence, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" went through many permutations between its point of origin, 1948, and its point of notorious, divisive publication, 1957. The best description of it came from Kerouac himself, in a journal entry written after his first cross-country road trip in 1948. The book he had in mind, he said, was about "two guys hitchhiking to California in search of something they don't really find, and losing themselves on the road, and coming all the way back hopeful of something else." There's a simple beauty to that. The question is: How do you film an extended yearning?

    ***1/2 (out of four)
***1/2 (out of four) If we cut loose with friends on vacation, do we lose ourselves or become who we really are? It's a big question generated in the unexpectedly great “Spring Breakers,” which, yeah, could be lazily dismissed as just an...

    **1/2 (out of four)
**1/2 (out of four) Oh, commerce and integrity. Can't you two ever get along? Five years after Daniel Day-Lewis, his mustache and his oil derricks wreaked havoc in early 20th century California, star/co-writer Matt Damon and “Promised Land&...

  13. Midwest native looks east in 'Somewhere Between'

"I am a child stuck between two countries," says 15-year-old Fang "Jenni" Lee in the insightful new documentary "Somewhere Between." Adopted at age 5 and raised in Berkeley, Calif., she is one of roughly 80,000 girls who have come to the U.S. since China first began allowing foreign adoptions in 1992.

  15. 'Promised Land': Fracking tale barely touches surface ★★

For a fellow who's just been promoted to vice president of land management by his multibillion-dollar natural gas company, the character played by Matt Damon in "Promised Land" is awfully wussy. He turns into a puddle whenever he's bested by the opposition: a likable environmental activist portrayed by John Krasinski. What's up? Mr. Corporate Slicko has never been trained in countering the other side's arguments?
