5. Review: 'Jack Reacher' is too much of a stretch for Tom Cruise

In "Jack Reacher," the new thriller starring Tom Cruise, the crime that draws the film's reclusive ex-Army investigator out of the shadows — a sniper gunning down people on a city street — couldn't have been a worse one to land in theaters just days after the horror of the Connecticut elementary school massacre (the studio delayed the film's release in the area).

  19. Is Tom Cruise big enough to carry 'Jack Reacher'?

The opening minutes of the action-thriller "Jack Reacher" unfold with a display of gun violence that will be strikingly familiar to anyone who has been horrified by headline news in recent weeks. A sniper is shown assembling his long-range assault rifle. He then leans over a balustrade and goes about systematically assassinating innocent victims, seemingly at random, as they walk along a Pittsburgh riverfront.

  23. DVD Review: Reaching for the combo 'Reacher' option

When Christopher McQuarrie's "Jack Reacher" came out late last year, most critics — myself included — wondered whether the many diehard fans of Lee Child's novels would be appalled by the casting of Tom Cruise, who is physically almost the opposite of Reacher. Not having read the books, I found the film thoroughly entertaining. One solid fan among my friends was prepared to hate it, but decided after the first few minutes that it was worth simply packing away his prior knowledge in a mental lock box; and he consequently enjoyed it immensely.
