1. OPINION: This Top 10 list dedicated to Jay Leno

The Record, Stockton, Calif.
For Stockton, there's no escaping the wrath of Jay Leno. "Stockton Bankruptcy" jokes are peppering his monologues almost on a nightly basis. Many are, as Atlantic magazine once described Leno's general comedic repertoire, "groan worthy." "Stockton...

3. Selection Sunday is exciting but will never top the NFL Draft

"Selection Sunday."
"Selection Sunday." It's got a nice ring, but don't get too cocky, basketball fans. Granted, you have one of the two best non-sporting sporting events (in which no scoring happens), but you will never touch the first day of the NFL Draft. But you...

7. How Oscars' fashion show changed through the decades

The Academy Awards are the biggest fashion runway on the planet. When Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and other stars step out onto the red carpet Sunday, they will be primed to talk as much about what and who they are wearing as about the films that got them there.

9. 'Hitchcock'

Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren are typically credible as legendary "master of suspense" Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma, in director Sacha Gervasi's docudrama, but the bigger interest is the movie's detailing of the complications - financial and...

13. Ann-Margret: The eternal kitten (with a whip) celebrated in Hollywood

Liz Smith
"WHY DO you think you're such a smoky something, when you're so nothing painted blue?" Every disreputable film fan knows that line. It is one of Ann-Margret's many out-of-space utterances in 1964's black-and-white juvenile delinquent saga, the luridly...

19. Advice for approaching DVD kiosk

As a relatively broke college student, Chicago-based writer Rob Christopher didn't have the cash to rent movies from a video store. Instead, he sought out his local library and discovered not only a repository of films vast enough to satisfy his tastes but the ability to try them out for free. "Free" beats Netflix and even Redbox by a mile, and with the demise of video stores, large and small, library film archives are often the only brick-and-mortar places with collections on hand.

21. Dressing the parts: Film costumes that help make statements

As the year winds down, multiplexes fill up with films vying for award-season consideration. Thanks to a bumper crop of period movies, late 2012 has showcased some serious talent in the field of costume design. Some of the films are worth watching for wardrobe alone while others serve up but a handful of standout screen-style moments. But whether it's Lincoln's stovepipe hat or Janet Leigh's curve-hugging dress, the costumes here have one thing in common: They help advance the story without hijacking it.

23. 'Hitchcock's' triple play

The original title of director Sacha Gervasi's "Hitchcock" was "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho," the name of Stephen Rebello's book on which the film is based. Anthony Hopkins, who plays the famed filmmaker in the movie, thought the longer name was a terrible idea, sounding more like a symposium than a film — "I said to Sacha, 'That's a doomed title," Hopkins said — and eventually Gervasi shared his actor's opinion.
