1. Flatlanders' Butch Hancock quirky and interesting at Godfrey Daniels

Lehigh Valley Music
Butch Hancock took Bethlehem’s Godfrey Daniels for a ride across Texas Wednesday evening, beginning with the town of Terlinqua (he asked if anyone had ever been there, and if so, why?) The casually dressed 67-year old used his small Art & Lutherie...

3. Cocina 214: A new place for Tex-Mex

I have nothing against Dallas. I love the town, the Texas State Fair and the way Jimmie Dale Gilmore describes the city in song. I have had wonderful Tex-Mex there at Matt's Rancho Martinez but have never considered Dallas famous for authentic Tex-Mex. Somehow I have equated that with San Antonio and El Paso.

5. Top weekend show: Flatlanders at Old Town School of Folk Music

Turn It Up
Flatlanders: Texas cranks out great songwriters with stunning regularity, but Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore are unbeatable as a collective. The Flatlanders put the alternative into alternative country in the early ‘70s – the humor,...

7. FFF Movie Review: Leaves of Grass

Frankly My Dear» Orlando Sentinel – Frankly My Dear
Leaves of Grass (2 1/2 stars out of 4) is an imitation Coen Brothers movie built around a great stunt. That great stunt is having the great Edward Norton play twin brothers — an Ivy League classics professor, learned in the ways of Socrates,...

11. INSIDE: Schubas Tavern

Sights: Schubas could be just about anywhere in white America. The layout is standard Chicago format: a long bar along the side of the place, high, detailed ceilings, nice woodwork and No. 23 radiating from every possible pore. Schubas is actually two...

15. Top 10 concerts of 2000

Chicago Tribune rock critic
In 2000, I caught more than 200 sets in venues ranging from 100-capacity clubs to Soldier Field -- so many shows, so little space to honor them all. But here goes, my annual list of the top 10 concerts in Chicago: 1. Lounge Ax finale, Jan. 4-Jan. 15:...

Special to the Tribune
With all the experimental noodling that's come to exemplify the Chicago indie rock scene, it was a bit of a shock to hear a slab of dazzling '60s/'70s-style pop emerge from the Windy City underground in 2002. But Jay Bennett & Edward Burch's "The Palace...

From the trippy folk-soul of Beth Orton to the rage and ruin of Rye Coalition, plus a rare visit from a Swedish juggernaut--it's a great couple of weeks for music in Chicago. Here's a breakdown of who to see and where, with their latest albums as a guide:...

Special to the Tribune
Texas singer-songwriters are generally a quirky lot, cultivating eccentricity within the otherwise risk-shy genre of country music. The state has produced a line of vocalists, including Willie Nelson, the late Townes Van Zandt, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore,...
