11. First Person: Patt Morrison's maiden voyage to the Oscars

I’ve flown in the Goodyear blimp. I’ve paddled down the L.A. River. I’ve spoken at two Hollywood Walk of Fame events. I’ve driven the wrong way at 90 mph on a new, still-unopened stretch of freeway (with a Caltrans guy beside me). But I’d never done the ultimate L.A. thing: I’d never been to the Oscars.

  21. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

  23. Oscar 8-Ball: Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master'

Thinking about our love for "The Master," we can't help but recall that early moment in the film when the military official tells the gathered veterans that "people on the outside will not understand the condition you have." Time to check in with the Oscar 8-Ball, that magical portal into the minds and hearts and, in the rare applicable instance, the souls of academy members and how they'll be voting this awards season.
