3. Cannes Film Festival: Nothing succeeds like excess -- and a white badge

CANNES, France — The class envy raging through F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” helps to explain why teenage readers, usually assigned the book in school, fall under its spell. So sad about that doomed love, the kids sigh. Money can’t buy you the best things in life. But those mad Prohibition-era parties sure seemed like the berries.

5. 'What Maisie Knew' review: Yes, what's that?

** (out of four)
** (out of four) Imagine if Henry James were alive to hear that his 1897 novel had been adapted by writers whose previous work includes the “Dungeons and Dragons” movie and an episode of “Tales from the Crypt.” You can't make up...

11. 'Being Flynn' review: A chip off the old, miserable block

**1/2 (out of four)
**1/2 (out of four) I’m not faulting Paul Dano for being one of the less (to put it nicely) screen-friendly presences in Hollywood. I am faulting “Being Flynn” for shoving Denise (Olivia Thirlby, excellent), a cute and extremely...

15. Cannes '08: It's over, but what just happened?

In the end, it was entirely appropriate that "What Just Happened" got the last flicker of light from the projector at this year's Festival de Cannes. It's about a troubled movie, starring Sean Penn, that plays to a rainy Cannes within a real-life troubled movie that closes a rainy Cannes. This in a year when the fake film's star (Penn) served as president of the official selection jury, and the real film's star, Robert De Niro, presented the Palme d'Or -- all during the wettest Cannes in years.

Just two days away from the official start of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and we find ourselves roaming the tiny island of Saint Honorat, a hidden gem and home to a monastery where for 15 centuries French monks have been living and praying in silence.

19. Best Movie Mothers

Blogging with Bill White
As we move into Mother's Day weekend, it seemed appropriate to construct a movie list of the 10 best movie moms. I concentrated on women whose movie roles focused mostly on them as protective/nutty/nurturing/valiant/eccentric/controlling mothers and...

21. ‘Game Change’ a Telling Political Guilty Pleasure

Off The Markley
I have a new favorite sexytime thought, which is Julianne Moore playing Sarah Palin. Let me just dwell on this for a second before launching into my thoughts on the HBO docudrama “Game Change” because Moore is one of those actresses who no...
