**1/2 (out of four)
RedEye movie critic

10. Announcing 2 major talents in 'Pariah' -- 3 1/2 stars

Remember the name Adepero Oduye. In fact, commit the spelling to memory. The luminous actress who plays the high school junior (nearly half the performer's real age) at the center of the exceptional, new, coming-of-age drama "Pariah" has one of those faces that lights up the screen while lighting the way for a filmmaker's story.

Michael Fassbender, 'Shame' and 'A Dangerous Method' You likely first saw Michael Fassbender as the cheeky Lt. Archie Cox in "Inglorious Basterds" or as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto in this summer's "X-Men: First Class." But it's the latter part of this year...

18. Filmmaker's choice

The holiday movie season is a crowded beast. So we asked filmmaker Hilton Carter, a MICA grad who now lives in Los Angeles, to give us his picks for what he can't wait to see. Carter, 31, whose dark short film "Moth" aired earlier this year on HBO, cut his teeth directing music videos for the likes of Blaqstarr and E Major. His latest project, heist comedy "One Last Run," will tentatively begin filming in Baltimore in mid-December (read more about the project and contribute on kickstarter.com). Here, Carter shares what he calls his "top five fils to finish the year." Shockingly, his list does not include "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked."

Though many are befuddled this year by the new Oscar math, perhaps unable to parse just how many votes it will take to land a best picture nomination or anticipate even how many nominees there will be, one recent regular equation looks to hold firm: One indie film plus one fresh ingénue equals nominations.
