1. Sheer for spring -- done properly

THIS spring, going sheer doesn't mean dressing like a 1980s video vixen. Forget raunchy and think romantic -- ethereal chiffon floral dresses at Roberto Cavalli, sheer organza color-blocking at Jil Sander and Venetian brocades encased in sheer netting, as if in soft focus, at Dolce & Gabbana.

3. Fashion rules thrown out at Cannes Film Festival

IT'S RAINING chats and chiens in Cannes, and nobody cares. Penelope Cruz doesn't rush along the red carpet at the premiere of the new Woody Allen film or pause to brush away the dew glistening on her inch-long eyelashes. She waves. She smiles. She mounts a few steps in a Marchesa gown as white as her teeth and repeats the drill. The crowd -- beneath a sea of colorful umbrellas that look like scattered bonbons from above -- whoop and wetly applaud.

7. $78 million of red ink?

Times Staff Writer
ON an old studio lot outside London, a production crew began work on the movie "Sahara" in November 2003 by staging the crash of a vintage airplane. But when the film opened in theaters in April 2005, the sequence had been deleted. "In the context of the...

9. Double-barreled firepower

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
It's one of the most urgent questions facing men of a certain age today, particularly in Latin American countries, a question that strikes at one's core values and affirms one's identity as a soccer-mad, tequila-swigging, red-blooded varon. That question...

21. Film review: Woody Allen's 'Rome' is good but can't top 'Paris'

In “To Rome with Love,” his latest feature — roughly No. 42, depending on how you count — the prolific Woody Allen continues his long European vacation. In 2005, he went to London to make “Match Point” and received his best reviews in a decade. (Check out a list of his previous 10 films, and you'll see what I mean.) In 2008, his Spanish outing, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” was even better received; and last year's “Midnight in Paris” still better than that, becoming his highest-grossing film ever and earning him his first Oscar since “Hannah and Her Sisters” in 1986.

23. DVD review: 'Cat Run' has some sharp extras

This overly violent but otherwise frequently enjoyable film showed up briefly in theaters more than a year ago, to little notice. It may have suffered from comparison to “Red,” the Bruce Willis/Helen Mirren/Morgan Freeman/John Malkovich action film that opened a few months earlier. The two are similar in type, in a few plot ideas, and through the remarkable resemblance between Janet McTeer's character here and Mirren's in “Red.” The big difference is the budget.
