1. Steven Soderbergh's 'Side Effects' hinges on medicine and murder ★★★

A sly one, "Side Effects" is a movie in which the main character's pharmacological state of mind is never entirely certain.
A sly one, "Side Effects" is a movie in which the main character's pharmacological state of mind is never entirely certain. In such a role it's critical to have someone who can keep an audience guessing as to the state of that mind, moment to moment....

3. Legendary director's foibles viewed through a gentle lens in 'Hitchcock': ★ ★½

Despite bringing Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein into the proceedings as a fanciful one-man Greek chorus, haunting Alfred Hitchcock's dreams as he prepares the Gein-inspired "Psycho," the biopic "Hitchcock" presents a gentle and forgiving view of Hitchcock's penchant for playing Svengali and, depending on the source being cited, possible thwarted Lothario to more than one leading lady.

5. Man About Town: Fear and priority passes in zombie land

One of the first things you have to realize about zombies is that they drool blood, which must be hell on the dry cleaning. Never date a zombie, not even over a cup of coffee, unless you're one of those women with a bad boy/blood complex, in which case there's probably no helping you.

7. Horror movies: Halloween's sweet spot

I do like horror movies ¿ just not the kind with umpteen sequels
Countdown to Halloween: five days. I don't like wearing costumes, I'm not into haunted houses, candy corn is too sweet, and I prefer pumpkin pie to pumpkin carvings. But I do like horror movies — just not the kind with umpteen sequels. I saw...

9. Presidential campaign will be like 'Psycho' shower

The great suspense movie director Alfred Hitchcock once was quoted saying, "Always make the audience suffer as much as possible."
The great suspense movie director Alfred Hitchcock once was quoted saying, "Always make the audience suffer as much as possible." One example certainly was his classic, "Psycho," whose most famous scene was so scary it made a generation of women...

11. Adventures in Barrywood: This summer features a lot of movies with surprise plot twists

Orange County Register
What is the statute of limitations on "Planet of the Apes?" It's been 45 years since Charlton Heston rode his horse down the beach on that strange planet and discovered that he actually was ... no, wait, I can't do it. I can't ruin it for someone who...

13. Movie Review: 'Serial Mom' is best when the mom is at her worst

Remember her? How could you forget her? She dominated your life like a Colossus of Toads.
Remember her? How could you forget her? She dominated your life like a Colossus of Toads. She was ... AIYYYYYEEEEEEEEE! ... Mom. Not your mom or my mom, but the mom we measured our moms against and by whose standards we found ours wanting. She was...

15. Movie moms: The good, the bad and the scary

Mother's Day is a time for families to be together, and one of the things that often brings people together is movies.
Mother's Day is a time for families to be together, and one of the things that often brings people together is movies. The truth is, there are not a lot of great "mom movies" in theaters right now (unless your mother is a really big "Evil Dead" fan)....

Grand Forks Herald
The key to watching a remake is going in with low to no expectations. I learned this the hard way when I went to the new "Evil Dead." Before the opening credits, I tweeted: "This better be as good as the original!" And I meant it. Wrong move. I...

21. Critic's Pick: 'The Sound of Music,' 'Psycho,' 'Mommie Dearest'

No matter whether your mother's taste — or your memory of her, for that matter — is sweet or sour, the American Cinematheque has Mother's Day programming to suit the occasion. If your mom likes things sweet, the Cinematheque's Aero Theatre in Santa Monica features a 5 p.m. screening of "The Sound of Music," with Julie Andrews and all those Von Trapp children singing their little hearts out. On the other hand, if your mom enjoys the dark end of the street, the Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood features the hair-frying 7:30 p.m. double bill of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and the Joan Crawford biopic "Mommie Dearest," starring Faye Dunaway as the parentally challenged star. It's nice to have a choice, my mother would say, and she'd be right.
