1. Review: 'The Iceman' can't heat up, even with Michael Shannon

Michael Shannon has basically rewritten the book on how to portray dark, volatile men in film with his unerring way of channeling rage and repression. It was never more chilling, or more fully realized, than his turn as a family man both paralyzed and driven by his apocalyptic fears in 2011's "Take Shelter."

3. Review: 'Mud' is a triumph for Matthew McConaughey, Jeff Nichols

"Do you love her?"
"Do you love her?" Wistful and hoping for a yes, the rough-hewn Arkansas boy who asks that question can't quite hold the gaze of the stranger, but his voice is insistent. The question comes early in "Mud" and will haunt the 14-year-old and the movie...

5. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

7. First Person: Bigelow praises 'Zero Dark Thirty's' Chastain

Editor's note: Taking a moment from her vigilant defense of depicting scenes of torture in "Zero Dark Thirty," director Kathryn Bigelow here addresses something else close to her heart about the film: The power, strength and vulnerability that lead actress Jessica Chastain brings to the work.

9. 'Pi,' 'Impossible': Nature's fury unleashed on the film screen

It could be a dark and stormy Oscar night. Among the historical epics, political thrillers and romantic dramas on the awards scene, several films that feature nature's fury are clouding the horizon. "Life of Pi," "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "The Impossible" are wildly different films, but all share the mighty power of the environment and their protagonists' helplessness against it.

15. Indie Focus: Which pretty new face will Oscars embrace?

Though many are befuddled this year by the new Oscar math, perhaps unable to parse just how many votes it will take to land a best picture nomination or anticipate even how many nominees there will be, one recent regular equation looks to hold firm: One indie film plus one fresh ingénue equals nominations.

23. Reading Eagle, Pa., George Hatza column

Reading Eagle, Pa.
Matthew McConaughey had planned on being a lawyer. Instead, in 1996, he played one in Joel Schumacher's film adaptation of John Grisham's "A Time To Kill." He caused a sensation. Handsome, idealistic, he drew comparisons to Paul Newman. That same year...
