5. Movie review: 'Albert Nobbs'

To say that "Albert Nobbs," starring Glenn Close as a woman passing as a man in 19th century Ireland, is a portrait of conflicted soul doesn't begin to touch the murky depths of the difficult character that is the pale center of this painful-to-watch film.

Contagion Warner Bros., $28.98; Blu-ray, $35.99 Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns take a novel approach to the medical-crisis thriller, mixing a spooky post-apocalyptic look with flat docu-realism. The film falls halfway between...

  11. Smart moves, sad omissions from Golden Globe 2011 movie noms

None. Not, as some predicted, for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Max Von Sydow) or Best Supporting Actress (Sandra Bullock). Well done, Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

  17. 'The Guard' review: Gleefully, hilariously profane and proud of it

    *** (out of four)
    RedEye movie critic
*** (out of four) Look up “Taking the piss” in an urban dictionary and you’ll probably see a picture of Sergeant Boyle (Brendan Gleeson), a cop who’s neither by the book nor full-on corrupt. He’s also a pain in the butt to...

For the f-word in heavy, conventional rotation, go see "The Change-Up." Which is another way of saying there's not much reason to go see "The Change-Up," unless you're an unusually big fan of Ryan Reynolds or Jason Bateman. But for the same word in heavy, unconventional and often very funny usage, in a disarming black comedy set in County Galway, Ireland, feast your ears on the sweetly profane dialogue of writer-director John Michael McDonagh as heard in "The Guard."
