1. Toronto's Hollywood juggernaut can't swamp indie pleasures

In "Argo," one of the leanest satisfactions of this year's massive Toronto International Film Festival, director and star Ben Affleck anchors a movie based on the true story about how Central Intelligence Agency operative Tony Mendez faked his way into Iran following the 1979 hostage crisis posing as a film producer scouting locations for a Canadian science-fiction film called "Argo." Under that cover story, Mendez engineered the rescue of six American hostages, themselves posing as part of the fake film crew.

3. Coaxing film from a former steel plant

"I used to spend summers with Uncle Nick as a kid," Pissios, a former real estate developer, tells me. He hung around the Cinespace Toronto soundstages. "That's how this whole thing happened. A few years ago, I was building condominiums by the United Center." Then came the mortgage and housing crises and the bad economic weather. Pissios went to Toronto for a wedding and saw his Uncle Nick. "And he said, 'How's things going?' I told him, 'Not so good. It's slow now.' And he said, 'We've always talked about opening up a studio in Chicago. Let's test the waters. Start lookin' around.'"

5. Sci-fi worthy of Malthus

In the new sci-fi movie "Oblivion," Earth's most precious resource is Tom Cruise. But running a close second (spoiler alert) is water. Aliens want it. All of it.
In the new sci-fi movie "Oblivion," Earth's most precious resource is Tom Cruise. But running a close second (spoiler alert) is water. Aliens want it. All of it. This is old hat, science fiction-wise. In "The War of the Worlds," H.G. Wells had...

7. A quirky recap of fall's top films—in verse!

Thanksgiving was fast approaching, and the holiday blockbusters were about to start. But I still hadn't seen any of the big fall movies. How was I ever going to catch up?

9. Patt Morrison Asks: The Possibilian, Kevin Kelly

This is a Klein bottle, a kind of Mobius strip rendered in glass. The man holding it has a brain not unlike these confounding items, possessed of unusual twists and multidimensional turns that can be challenging for lesser mortals to get their own heads around. Kevin Kelly began reflecting on the techno-Internet world before most people even knew it existed. A co-founder of Wired magazine, and still its "senior maverick," his brainstorming writings influenced the films "Minority Report" and "The Matrix," but that's the stuff he has already done. It's the stuff Kelly still wants to do -- and to take the world along him -- that boots him up.

11. Patt Morrison Asks: The poet, W.S. Merwin

An Idaho resort hotel's verdure is not the wild tumble around W.S. Merwin's beloved Hawaiian home, but disciplined grass and orderly stands of trees. Not, perhaps, the sort of trees Merwin had in mind when he wrote, "On the last day of the world I would want to plant a tree." But the Sun Valley Writers' Conference bears an annual crop of words and ideas, and Merwin is here as a master gardener of that. He just ended a year's term as the nation's poet laureate. He has to his name two Pulitzer Prizes and more than 30 books of poetry and prose, and a hand-planted forest at home of rare and endangered palms. The Merwin Conservancy is dedicated to keeping his works green -- the ones he created with words, and the natural ones that exist before and beyond them.

15. 'Cloud Atlas'

Since they're ambitious directors within their own spheres, the Wachowskis ("The Matrix") and Tom Tykwer ("Run Lola Run") only could yield a massively ambitious project by teaming up. This film certainly is that, and even if the lengthy result - based...

17. A mermaid, a fashion film, a bath bomb and 'The Great Gatsby' [Updated 4:37 p.m. May 10]

Members of L.A.’s film music elite mingled with weather-beaten eco-warrior sailors and neo Edwardian fashionistas amid costumes from Baz Luhrmann’s "The Great Gatsby" Tuesday night at the multi-textured unveiling of musician-arranger-composer Ysanne Spevack’s ambitious music-fashion-film-beauty concept, the Coldwater Project.

"Oblivion" will make you remember, not forget.

23. Biblioracle: Bring 'Geek Love' to the big screen

In general, I like to keep my books and my movies separate. When I finish a book and clutch it to my breast in a final loving embrace, I am not fantasizing about how the characters and conflict will play out on screen, since I've already had it play out across the inside of my skull.
