  3. Critic's Pick: 'The Sound of Music,' 'Psycho,' 'Mommie Dearest'

No matter whether your mother's taste — or your memory of her, for that matter — is sweet or sour, the American Cinematheque has Mother's Day programming to suit the occasion. If your mom likes things sweet, the Cinematheque's Aero Theatre in Santa Monica features a 5 p.m. screening of "The Sound of Music," with Julie Andrews and all those Von Trapp children singing their little hearts out. On the other hand, if your mom enjoys the dark end of the street, the Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood features the hair-frying 7:30 p.m. double bill of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and the Joan Crawford biopic "Mommie Dearest," starring Faye Dunaway as the parentally challenged star. It's nice to have a choice, my mother would say, and she'd be right.

  9. Western Costume, closet to the stars, turns 100

To the casual passerby, there's nothing remarkable about the 120,000-square-foot former printing plant fronting a sun-baked stretch of Vanowen Street in North Hollywood. There's nothing to indicate that, just beyond the double doors, gangsters are earning their stripes, "Mad Men" are being made and entire armies are getting outfitted in a rabbit warren of rooms flanked by a cavernous warehouse crammed with period clothing from multiple eras.
