  1. Michael Stuhlbarg: A 'Serious' awards contender

    Gold Derby
Michael Stuhlbarg gives such an impressive performance as a 1960s suburban poppa whose life crumbles in "A Serious Man" that he's a good bet to be nominated for best actor at the Golden Globes. The comedy/musical category is light, and the filmmakers...

  5. Shrewd DVD strategies reap rewards with Oscar nominations

    Gold Derby
So how did "A Serious Man" pull off that underdog Oscar nomination for best picture? Perhaps because it was among the first wave of DVD screeners shipped to academy members, long before the deluge of discs that arrived during the holiday season. Such an...

  7. From supporting actor to star, Richard Jenkins steps up in 'The Visitor'

THERE is no such thing as a Richard Jenkins movie, though he's been in more than 70 of them. Even in his best-known role -- as the mortuary paterfamilias, Nathaniel Fisher, on the HBO series "Six Feet Under" -- Jenkins was dead, haunting the characters from the margins, a figment of their inner lives.

  9. Unlikely front-runners face a still-formidable Clint Eastwood

This year's lead actor and supporting actor categories offer no end of irony.

  11. During award season it pays to be Kate -- or Cate

If you're an actress, keep in mind that when it comes to getting nominated for an Oscar it doesn't hurt if your name is Kate.
If you're an actress, keep in mind that when it comes to getting nominated for an Oscar it doesn't hurt if your name is Kate. Kate Hepburn managed to do it 12 times, winning a record four as leading actress, more than any other actor. By age 32, Kate...

  13. 'Juno' set high box office standard for fest fare

FILM festivals are justifiably infamous for gluttonous parties, craven swag suites and break-the-bank bidding wars. But does having played the festivals actually help sell tickets when the movie finally hits theaters? The makers of two movies opening this week -- "<a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/reviews/la-et-young9apr09%2C1%2C492492.story">Young@Heart&rdquo;</a> and "The Visitor" -- pray that the answer is yes.

  15. Lack of reviews won't kill 'Prom Night'

"Leatherheads," last weekend's release starring George Clooney and Renee Zellweger, was the kind of quirky movie that needed help from critics despite its prominent cast. Instead, Universal Pictures' screwball-football comedy, a period piece aimed at adults, got lukewarm reviews and opened to a soft $12.7 million at the box office.

  17. Richard Jenkins, 'The Visitor'

A longtime character actor with one of those "Don't I know you?" faces, Richard Jenkins has been building award buzz for his role in "The Visitor" since it first appeared on the festival circuit more than a year ago. If not exactly his "big break," for Jenkins, 61, the part is his first leading role.

  19. Music for 'The Visitor'

"The Visitor" took me by surprise in how quickly and unexpectedly it took shape musically in my mind. In part, I think it was because at the core it is a musical film with a drum as its heartbeat. The drum sets the pace. It creates the basis that brings Walter Vale (played by Richard Jenkins) out of his empty life. His first tentative taps on the <i>djembe</i> were to me like his sputtering heart waking up again. So with the beat already strong, I simply followed it to its musical conclusion. I sought to evoke Walter's transformation from a man skirting the edges of everyday life to a man part of a community fighting for its survival.

Josh Radnor, best known for the sitcom <em>How I Met Your Mother</em>, struck out on his first film &ndash; <em>HappyThankYouMorePlease</em>. In this movie, he hits it out of the park. Perhaps some of the themes you&rsquo;ve seen before &ndash; age difference in relationships, college freshman exciting to discover classical music and authors, and older folks disgruntled with the world. Those older folks range from a guy in his 30s that&rsquo;s tired of his dead end job, a guy in his 60s retiring from a job, and a woman in her 50s that&rsquo;s an influential teacher &ndash; who couldn&rsquo;t care less about the praise that&rsquo;s heaped upon her.
