7. Icelandic Musician Valgeir Sigurdsson Performs at Spaceland Ballroom on March 29

Icelandic musician Valgeir Sigurðsson has quite an impressive resume of production credits for music recording (Feist, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Kate Nash, et al.). Maybe he's so successful in his recording career because he actually knows how to make music and what it should sound like. Sigurðsson performs at the newly opened Spaceland Ballroom Friday night, where he'll recreate his brand of experimental music. His most recent record Architecture of Loss, released last year, is a collection of sounds that are at times ghostly and haunting, warm and calming, or filled with tension. This is a performance not to miss. Violist Nadia Sirota will join him onstage.

  9. Points to Consider

While the name Henry Wagons (pictured) only resonates with a few lucky folks stateside, consider these facts: 1) In his native Melbourne, Australia, the outlaw-country-rock singer-songwriter was named one of the cities' 100 most influential people; 2) he leads a very good band, called the Wagons, and has toured with Lucinda Williams, Bill Callahan, Will Oldham, Okkervil River, John Hiatt and others; 3) he's a much, MUCH better singer-songwriter than Russell Crowe. (Oh, and 4) Wagons will be at Black-Eyed Sally's in Hartford on Friday, touring behind his new album Expecting Company.)

  11. Spiritual themes get a patient, observational treatment in 'New Jerusalem' ★★★

In the movies, evangelical Christians are seldom treated as anything other than blinkered bundles of piety, or worse. So in "New Jerusalem," it's something of a shock to see the character played by Will Oldham (an actor-musician who performs, in his other career, as Bonnie "Prince" Billy) rendered as recognizably humane in his well-meaning imperfections.

  17. Dawes Step Forward While Staring a Few Decades Back

If you've never heard a note played by either Simon Dawes or Dawes, it's understandably very easy to get the two bands mixed up. After all, their names are very similar and lineup-wise, both are almost the same thing. But to Taylor Goldsmith, Simon Dawes (his defunct group) and Dawes (his current group) are the products of considerably different approaches—an idea evidenced by how he responds to the same question on both groups. In 2006, the Los Angeles Times, the act's hometown newspaper, asked Goldsmith what the indie/alt-rock-leaning Simon Dawes would be like if it were an actual person and not a band. “He would probably be very neurotic,” the vocalist/guitarist said. “And probably the center of the universe."
