3. Aisles of treats from the Emerald Isle

When the luck of the Irish holds, the lovers buy Claddagh rings for their valentines, frat boys gearing up for St. Paddy's Day go for Guinness caps with built-in bottle openers — and come Christmas, there's a run on plum pudding and St. Nicks in Kelly green.

5. Best TV shows of 2012: The year of Sherlock Holmes

For the generations of men who have wondered what it is women want, this year has made it fairly obvious. We want a man of devastating intelligence, cerebrally and physically nimble, whose vast store of arcane knowledge is foundation for a super-human ability to solve problems and the fascinating, frustrating wall that protects a tender heart.

11. Jane Glover takes stock of her fruitful decade with Music of the Baroque

Chicago music has long gone gaga over the Brits, and not simply because the city's two leading opera companies are, or were, run by thoroughly capable Englishmen – Anthony Freud at Lyric Opera and Brian Dickie, who retired last year after 13 seasons as general director of Chicago Opera Theater.

15. Torrington's Warner Theatre Hosts a Downton Abbey-Themed Party For the Premiere of Season 3

And there was much rejoicing by British-TV obsessives: Connecticut's own CPTV celebrates its 50th year of existence with a gala of Edwardian proportions at Torrington's Warner Theatre on Saturday, starting at 5:30 p.m. For $60 a head, participants (encouraged to dress in period clothing) will drink from a smattering of wines, dine oh-so-elegantly on hors d'oeuvres (provided by the Litchfield Saltwater Grille) and politely view a presentation on Downton Abbey-era fashion, before plunking their Yankee hindquarters in preferred seats for the advance screening of the Downton Abbey, Season 3 premiere. (Common folks are also welcome, free of charge, but they still need to reserve ahead of time.) The show, written and created by Julian Fellowes, features an all-star cast (pictured). The DA season premiere will air on CPTV on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. The Warner Theatre is located at 68 Main Street in Torrington. For reservations visit warnertheatre.org or cpbn.org.

17. B is for bizarre -- also for Boehner, budget and Washington bozos

Paul Greenberg
How long is this show going to go on in Washington, and must it? They say closing time for its costars is midnight, December 31. That's when the president and the speaker of the House need to agree on the federal budget Or Else, but politicians never...

21. Q&A: Future of the Left singer Andy Falkous

The increasingly bland, widely accessible pop-rock of the Brits in Coldplay have made them international stars. Relatively close by in Wales, Future of the Left has delivered three fantastic records—including this year’s “The Plot Against Common Sense”—of sharp, aggressive indie rock wrapped around lyrics both cutting and hilarious. Consequently: The more acclaimed but less popular band works day jobs, and, says singer Andy Falkous, don’t make much of a living from their work.

23. For Brits, Cavendish's run at gold just so much road kill

LONDON — Over Londoner John Armah's shoulder, about a quarter-mile away, was Buckingham Palace. Just around the corner was the prime minister's residence. The stage was perfectly set for the apparent inevitability Saturday when reigning world champion cyclist Mark Cavendish would win Britain's first gold medal of the 2012 Olympics.
