5. Led Zep Trades Liners With Letterman

Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and CBS’ Late Show host David Letterman swapped one-liners last night during the band’s very rare joint appearance on late-night television. Early in the interview, Letterman asked his fellow Kennedy Center Honorees if they’d ever received a comparable award in the UK and all three in unison simply said “No!” Laughs ensured, and later Letterman asked the band about the influence Buddy Guy (another freshly minted Kennedy Center Honoree) and other bluesmen had on Led Zeppelin’s sound. Page said Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters and other legendary bluesman had a huge influence on his and Jeff Beck’s playing. Meanwhile, Plant added Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochraneand Elvis Presley’s names into the early influence conversation, recalling the one time the band met “The King,” saying, “Elvis had a lot of chicks.” Letterman immediately quipped, “That’s something you all had in common.” Finally, Letterman expressed how cool it was to have been able to hang out and get to know the three of them as part of the entire Kennedy Center Honors celebration, and jokingly added, “I feel like I ought to be in the band, don’t you think?” A deadpan Jones quickly replied, “No!” See some of the interview here.

  11. Choosing books for the holidays

Inevitably this holiday season, my mom will tick through her shopping list and say with a sigh, "Your dad wants a book." Since I was a kid, my mom has teased my dad about the predictablity of this ritual, which usually involves the purchase of a brick-sized tome of history. I love shopping for my dad. I don't buy what he asks for; I go with books I suspect he'll like. Bill Buford's "Heat," a memoir about Italian cooking, was an unexpected hit. The next year, I bought him a cookbook.
