Victor Goines

A charismatic tenor saxophonist and sublime clarinetist, Goines has been a noteworthy -- if somewhat ephemeral -- contributor to music in Chicago since he joined the faculty of the Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music in 2008. Because Goines also tours the globe busily with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, his concert and club appearances here have not been nearly as frequent as his admirers might like. That makes his shows this weekend important occasions -- all the more, because he'll be celebrating the release of his newest album, "Twilight" (Rosemary Joseph Records). Goines' New Orleans roots radiate from most of his music-making, but nowhere more than when he plays music of one of his greatest influences, Sidney Bechet.
