A product of DuSable High School, Von Freeman has played with legends, from <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PECLB003372" title="Charlie Parker" href="/topic/entertainment/music/charlie-parker-PECLB003372.topic">Charlie Parker</a> and <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PECLB001933" title="Dizzy Gillespie" href="/topic/entertainment/music/dizzy-gillespie-PECLB001933.topic">Dizzy Gillespie</a> to Sun Ra and Jimmy Witherspoon. He is considered the founder of the "Chicago School" of jazz tenor sax players which includes <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PECLB000121" title="Gene Ammons" href="/topic/entertainment/gene-ammons-PECLB000121.topic">Gene Ammons</a>, Johnny Griffin and Clifford Jordan.
