1. Spring Awakening plays at Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre in Storrs

Based on a Frank Wedekind play from the 19th century, Spring Awakening, featuring music and lyrics by rocker Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, won eight Tony awards (including best musical and best score) and four drama desk awards. Backed by a rock score for band and string trio, the show revolves around a group of late 19th-century German students doing what kids their age have always done well: rebel. (Other themes — sexual abuse, abortion, suicide, homosexuality — certainly will connect with contemporary audiences as well.)

5. Aimee Mann's CPTV taping at Norfolk's Infinity Hall

Singer-songwriter Aimee Mann shows up to do a CPTV taping at Norfolk's Infinity Hall, a mere three days before her arch-nemesis Suzanne Vega rolls into town. (Okay, the rivalry's not real, but it got laughs last season on "Portlandia," where Mann played herself as a cleaning lady.) Mann's solo career has earned her plenty of well-deserved critical accolades; rumor has it she's currently adapting one of her albums, The Forgotten Arm, into a musical. (Is that going to piss off Duncan Sheik?)

17. Duncan Sheik returns to the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton on Dec. 12

Recently, Duncan Sheik's life came close to unraveling. In June, on the day his latest album, Covers ’80s, was released, Sheik entered a treatment center for alcohol abuse. He wrote extensively about the experience on his website: "Duncan here, offering you belated apologies for the cancellation of my June tour. The truth is I didn’t do it because I realized I was drinking too much and chose to confront that situation, with the help of family, great friends and some thoughtful, highly qualified professionals."

19. A lively show, but no 'Awakening'

THEATER REVIEW: "Spring Awakening" by Griffin Theatre at Theater Wit ★★½ ... At the top of director Jonathan Berry's new Chicago production, Aja Wiltshire's Wendla walks out on stage alone to sing her first number: "Mama Who Bore Me."
The original Broadway production of the musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind's "Spring Awakening" was suffused with a metadramatic, schoolhouse sensibility: an audience seated on the stage; a listing of the haunting Duncan Sheik musical numbers on the...
