1. Elliott Smith to be celebrated with tributes in L.A., elsewhere

The late singer Elliott Smith would have turned 44 this summer, and despite his death 10 years ago his music remains as beloved as ever. This spirit, which was extinguished when he took his own life in Silver Lake, will be celebrated in August when Smith's friends and inheritors honor his legacy with a weeklong national event called "No Name #1: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Elliott Smith."

  9. No Age's 'Weirdo Rippers' sign on the Smell mysteriously repainted

Though far from iconic, the hand-painted sign on the face of downtown music club the Smell has long held a place in the hearts of Los Angeles experimental rock fans. It reads, in big, bold letters, "No Age," and below it, "Weirdo Rippers." Like the Silver Lake mural that Elliott Smith posed in front of for his album "Figure 8," the downtown sign resonates for a certain segment of the music population.

  15. Restaurants: Más Malo in downtown Los Angeles

The chewy chips at Más Malo will ruin your appetite if you're not careful. Eat one and the blind flirtation of grease and salt on your tongue will cause you to reach for another, and then another. And before you know it you will become a mindless hand-to-basket-to-mouth machine, dipping these intentionally crunchless, deep-fried curiosities into the pillowy depths of the restaurant's housemade guacamole and through the fiery landscape of its five-part salsa flight.
