Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reportedly wanted to name their baby North. As in North West.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reportedly wanted to name their baby North. As in North West. Besides being ridiculous, this makes us wonder, if West had additional kids, would he name them based on all the directions of the compass? South, East and...

  11. Zubin Mehta's heady days as Los Angeles Philharmonic music director

Bombay born and Vienna trained, debonair enough to impress Hollywood and with a swashbuckling podium style, Zubin Mehta conducted his first concert as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic 50 years ago. On Nov. 15, 1962, he was 26, the youngest music director in the orchestra's history, but to observers inside the Philharmonic Auditorium, Mehta came off as unshakably self-confident and strikingly capable. In six more years he would make the cover of Time magazine, an extraordinary feat for a conductor of any age.

  13. Review: Shuggie Otis' efforts are frustrated at Echoplex

Sometimes things fall apart. It's an unfortunate part of the deal. Just because music happens doesn't always mean it happens right, on schedule or as planned. Feedback happens. Budding genius is quashed by forces outside of one's control.

First published on Oct. 30, 2011. Revised and expanded in early 2012. Set an out-of-towner loose to roam the Los Angeles area between West Hollywood and Koreatown, and what can you expect? A food-truck overdose, perhaps. Or the bold suggestion that we...

  17. Rock 'n' Reubens in the Kibitz Room at Canter's

Rock 'n' roll is to the Kibitz Room at Canter's what onions are to chopped liver. The two have been closely aligned since the little bar opened just off the beloved Fairfax Avenue deli's annex dining room in 1961. Only now, instead of a bunch of hippies and musicians like Frank Zappa and Jim Morrison hanging out there for the cheap booze and meaty sandwiches, you'll find a bunch of hipsters and indie rock musicians hanging out there for the cheap booze and meaty sandwiches. So things have changed, but not that much.

  19. Southern California Close-Ups: From West Hollywood to Wilshire

Set an out-of-towner loose to roam the Los Angeles area between West Hollywood and Koreatown and what can you expect? A food-truck overdose, perhaps. Or the bold suggestion that we extend our subway system westward. (Hey, we're working on it.) Or maybe just your basic Asian-Russian-Latino-gay-vegetarian-barbecue-automotive-modernist-tar-pit-chili-dog weekend.
