  1. Benjamin Jealous: Mr. Rights

Benjamin Jealous hears it so often that I'm sure he just lets it slide off by now: "You weren't even born when ... " Fill in the blank with your favorite milestone of recent racial history in this country -- when Rosa Parks sat down on the bus, when the...

Sheryl Crow "Detours" (A&M) *** ½ THERE'S a concept in psychology of the "good-enough mother" -- the exemplary caregiver who satisfies a child's needs without smothering budding independence. Today's stressed-out parents have turned to this 1950s ideal...

  9. John Mellencamp's season of political discontent

JOHN MELLENCAMP captured something about himself three decades ago when he penned the words, "I need a lover that won't drive me crazy." Someone who knows the meaning of "hey hit the highway."

  11. That's so American

It doesn't surprise me that, after 14 years of stalking the American pickup market, Toyota has finally unleashed full-size pickup hell with its monstrous Toyota Tundra, a truck that goes nose to nose with big-ugly domestics Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado. Now that I have driven the redesigned 2007 Toyota Tundra -- in its most gawdamighty-large configuration, the CrewMax 4X4 SR5 with the 5.7-liter V8 -- I can't even raise an eyebrow. It's exactly what I thought it would be: a half-earnest, half-mocking tribute to the American pickup truck, bigger and saccharine-sweeter than its competitors, with major-league engineering (1,590-pound payload capacity in 4x4 trim) and focus-group features galore, including half a dozen of the biggest cup holders this side of the NFL.

Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman "The Fabled City" (Epic) * * * Some people think folk music is more honest than other forms, but it's also rich territory for alter egos. Bob Dylan called himself Blind Boy Grunt to continue making folk recordings as he...

  19. 'March On, Dream Normal'

It must be said: Theater is doing a heckuva better job than Hollywood at creating meaningful dramas about the Iraq war. Maybe it's because the under-the-radar nature of theater companies lets them take risks and make bold statements. Or maybe it's because the theater, which has always valued ideas over adrenaline, is a natural medium for such a complicated subject.
