It's word association time. Say the first word that springs to mind: "holiday ----." Did you think "season"? "Sale"? "Hangover"?

  13. Rock 'n' Reubens in the Kibitz Room at Canter's

Rock 'n' roll is to the Kibitz Room at Canter's what onions are to chopped liver. The two have been closely aligned since the little bar opened just off the beloved Fairfax Avenue deli's annex dining room in 1961. Only now, instead of a bunch of hippies and musicians like Frank Zappa and Jim Morrison hanging out there for the cheap booze and meaty sandwiches, you'll find a bunch of hipsters and indie rock musicians hanging out there for the cheap booze and meaty sandwiches. So things have changed, but not that much.

  17. Review: Carole King reveals the story behind 'A Natural Woman'

My favorite scene in Carole King's long-awaited "A Natural Woman" comes near the beginning — appropriately, since the teen hitmaker was the epitome of an early starter. The high school student born Carol Klein had just signed a recording contract with ABC-Paramount. She was attending her first session as a guest when her host Don Costa, the conductor of the session's orchestra, had to leave the room. King had never held a baton nor read a score before, but she stepped to the podium and, at age 15, proceeded to lead the room of professional musicians.

Here are sample playlists put together from my own (admittedly limited) library, each one "arced" for a particular purpose. Then I asked a few folks who can really pick out a tune to share their sample lists.
