Brand X
Among photographers, he's a rock star. Among rock stars, he's a photographer. Over the course of his decades-long career, San Francisco-based lensman Jay Blakesberg has shot portraits of Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits (above), Nirvana,...

3. Christmas music is in season

The bounty of new holiday albums is impressive -- little else is selling, the thinking seems to be, so let's see if Santa and Rudolph can salvage the end of the year. This year's batch is suitably diverse, many hurriedly assembled as a seasonal bonus primarily for an artist's most ardent fans, a few exhibiting real thought and care about what the holiday season means. ¶ What follows is a look at some of the most interesting collections available right now.

5. Michelin on the Hudson

Special to The Times
New York's one drawback as a restaurant city has long been what Joni Mitchell called the craziness that comes from too much choice. Since the dominant guidebook, the Zagat Survey, is really more of a gazetteer, anyone setting out to eat had no serious way...

7. Herbie Hancock at the Playboy Jazz Festival

HERBIE HANCOCK'S performance at the Playboy Jazz Festival on Sunday comes in the midst of a bountiful year. Yes, the veteran jazz pianist/composer's Hollywood Hills home glistens with the an impressive collection of Grammys, an Oscar and other awards. But Hancock has never received a statuette with as much cachet as the Album of the Year Grammy he got on Feb. 10 for his recording, "River: The Joni Letters." On Sunday, his Playboy Jazz set will feature numbers from Hancock's acclaimed album, as well as a rare live rendering of his 1983 hit, "Rockit," and guest appearances by singers Sonya Kitchell and Amy Keys, bassist Marcus Miller and DJ C-Minus. We sat down with Hancock last week, fresh off his Brazilian tour.

13. A Backstage Pass to Intimate Moments in Rock's Odyssey

It was the fall of 1969, and Janis Joplin, the biggest female star in rock, seemed invincible on stage — long, reddish hair swinging wildly as she stretched her vocal cords to alarming limits: "Come on, come on, come on, come on and take it … take another little piece of my heart now, baby!"

19. Ronnie Hawkins: Rock legend on both sides of border

If you are a fan of Bob Dylan and the Band, you might have heard the name Ronnie Hawkins quite a bit over the years, though you probably haven't heard much of his actual music -- the Canadian-based rocker has had little sales chart presence in this country.
