1. Counting down to Lit Fest

(This selection is edited for clarity and length.)
(This selection is edited for clarity and length.) Tom Acitelli What do you think of when you think of Chicago? Oddly enough, the 1860 Republican convention that nominated Abraham Lincoln. Who is an author you'd like to meet, dead or alive?...

7. Plucked from obscurity, Ukulele Orchestra still strums up business

DORTMUND, Germany — At 5:30 p.m. backstage at a concert hall here a few weeks ago, a security guard delivers a small brown bag from a chocolate shop in Paris. Devouring the contents is not a folk-rock pixie and her gang of bearded sidemen but eight mostly middle-aged ukulele players. Still, they are rock stars of a certain kind.

9. Review: Ellie Goulding starry-eyed at the Palladium

Ellie Goulding described herself as “just a country girl” at her sold-out Hollywood Palladium show Tuesday night. That’s a curious self-image for a 26-year-old English electro-pop vixen with a one-quarter shaved head and a quiver of ravey, chart-topping singles.

13. Found Objects: Blue Oyster Cult's "The Revenge of Vera Gemini" (1976)

"The Revenge of Vera Gemini,” by Blue Oyster Cult, is the last song of side A on their 1976 album, Agents of Fortune. It was a good year for BOC. Agents of Fortune contained the hit song “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” which almost cracked the top ten, right in the center of side A. I read about "The Revenge of Vera Gemini" and Blue Oyster Cult in Will Hermes’ Love Goes to Buildings on Fire, a book about five pivotal musical years in late-’70s New York City. Reading Hermes' book and listening to the playlist felt like browsing through record store bins, with old album cover dust in your nose. A playlist circulated on Spotify with every song mentioned in Hermes text. It ended being several days' worth of music, including “Vera Gemini," which Hermes mentioned only in passing.
