  3. Dennis Hopper's carnival ride through life

"I was a beatnik, and then I was a hippie, and before that I was a bohemian," a sky-high Dennis Hopper confided to Merv Griffin on television one night in 1971, in a clip you can see on YouTube. On the opposite couch, Willie Mays uncomfortably refilled his glass of water and James Brolin sneered — Hopper certainly didn't belong to their worlds.

  13. Review: 'Deadfall' runs hot and cold

Like the deer in the headlights that opens the thriller "Deadfall," this is a film about the tragic consequences of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bad roads, bad weather, bad family dynamics are equally problematic. And when Olivia Wilde's lost girl Liza says, "You don't want to take me home," well, that should not be taken lightly.

  17. Frank Pierson dies at 87; Oscar-winning screenwriter

A writer for as long as he could remember, Frank Pierson penned his most famous line, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv=1fuDDqU6n4o">"What we've got here is failure to communicate,"</a> decades ago for the 1967 script "Cool Hand Luke." At the time, he thought there was no way such a refined line would be allowed to be uttered by the redneck crew captain who has just taught Paul Newman's Luke a brutal lesson. To ensure the line stayed in, Pierson wrote an entire biography for the captain, one he never needed to use because no one ever questioned the quote that has since become one of the most iconic in movie history.
