Where did the summer go? Is it just me, or did this year fly by in a whirlwind of pool parties, music festivals, and crazy club nights? Time flies with you’re having a blast, San Diego style. It’s sad but true, Labor Day means that the end of summer is upon us. And we San Diegans are prepped and ready to finish the season off with a big bang. My top events for this weekend include the Contemporary Art Fair, kicking off Arts Month, the Identity Music Festival at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, Avicii spinning Wavehouse, DJ Pauly D spinning Intervention, and The Great American Showcase mini festival in East Village. I’m not ready to say goodbye to summer, but I’m definitely ready to embrace this weekend’s hot entertainment lineup.
Contemporary Art Fair at Hilton Bayfront – 9/1-4
We all know Labor Day to be the sad end of summer. But, this weekend also signals the beginning of Arts Month San Diego – one whole month dedicated to the local arts and culture scene. The Contemporary Art Fair is a four-day celebration that kicks off Arts Month, September 1 – 4, taking place at the Hilton Bayfront hotel in downtown San Diego. The Opening Night Party is on Thursday from 5 to 9pm, featuring a collectors club first art preview followed by an after pool party. Friday through Sunday, the Art Fair is open from noon til night, showcasing pieces from 69 contemporary art galleries as well as solo exhibitions by new artists, “art labs” at locations across the city, artist discussion panels, food and wine events and after parties. Described as a marketplace for the world’s leading contemporary galleries, Art Fair is a great, interactive opportunity to connect with the local and international arts industry. Identity Music Festival at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre – 9/2
Hailed as the first traveling electronic music festival, Identity is coming to San Diego this Friday, bringing a huge lineup of house and electro artists to Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre. There are three different stages throughout the Cricket campus featuring over 20 acts, including Kaskade, Pretty Lights, Afrojack, Steve Aoki, Aeroplane, The Crystal Method, LA Riots and many more. Although Cricket hosts concerts every day, the Identity Music Festival will bring an entirely new experience to the iconic outdoor venue. Identity starts at 1pm and continues all night long. Tickets are currently at $75 at livenation.com.
LED Presents Avicii at Wavehouse – 9/3
Starting Saturday, the rest of Labor Day weekend is all about the pool parties. This day-life party scene continues well through September, but this weekend features the best music lineup we will see the rest of the season. One of the best Saturday pool parties is going down at Wavehouse in Mission Beach, showcasing the Swedish DJ / producer Avicii. He is referred to as one of the best new artists in the electronic music industry, and is known best for his single “Bromance” as well as “My Feelings for You,” with Sebastien Drums, “Street Dancer,” and “Tweet It,” among others. Learn more on LED’s Facebook page.
DJ Pauly D at Intervention – 9/3
Another good bet for Saturday fun is a special edition of Intervention, featuring DJ Pauly D – also known as the tan and buff star of MTV’s Jersey Shore. The Hard Rock hosts one of the best pool parties in San Diego, and the scene is sure to go off during Labor Day weekend. Whether you’re a big Jersey Shore fan or not, the Italian stallion is a rising star in the DJ industry. Learn more at interventionsd.com.
The Great American Showcase at El Dorado – 9/4
If you’re looking for a different scene than the typical pool party atmosphere on Sunday, check out The Great American Showcase, an indoor / outdoor mini music festival hosted by El Dorado in East Village. This event promises a fun day of good food, craft beer, and local music. You can expect to rock out to 15 musical artists on two separate stages outside of El Dorado. Headline acts include The Soft Pack, The Nervous Wreckords, The Howls, The Creepy Creeps, Old English, Grand Tarantula and more. Kick back with barbeque bites and drink your heart’s desire in the Mission Brewery craft beer garden. Pre-sale tickets are $20, including one drink, and will be $25 at the door. The event is from 2 – 10pm. Learn more at greatamericanshowcase.us.
