  1. 'Twin Peaks' to be 're-soundtracked' by Silent Drape Runners

It’s no longer unusual for vintage silent films to be shown with live music provided by a pianist, organist or even an orchestra. Occasionally, enterprising presenters host screenings of classic sound films with on-site orchestral backing: “West Side Story” was shown that way in 2011 at the Hollywood Bowl to accompaniment provided by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

  3. Jim James of My Morning Jacket to release solo album

Jim James has done plenty of work lately outside the confines of his Kentucky-based roots-rock band, My Morning Jacket: In 2009 he recorded and toured with Conor Oberst, M. Ward and Mike Mogis as <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2009/sep/20/entertainment/ca-monsters-folk20" target="_blank">Monsters of Folk</a>, and earlier this year he took part in an all-semi-star homage to Woody Guthrie called "<a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2012/02/woody-guthrie-new-multitudes-jay-farrar-yim-yames-.html" target="_blank">New Multitudes</a>." There's also "Tribute To," the 2009 EP of George Harrison covers he put out under the name Yim Yames.

  5. Review: Moving right along with the Black Keys at Staples Center

The Black Keys spent the beginning of last week in New York City, where they played for more than 60,000 people at a massive outdoor concert in Central Park with Neil Young and Foo Fighters. Saturday evening, they ended the week at L.A.&rsquo;s Staples Center, rounding out a two-night stand sandwiched between similar engagements by Justin Bieber and Madonna.

  9. Kimbra brings 'Vows' to the Fonda Theatre

An experienced presence in her native New Zealand, Kimbra bent American ears -- and quite a few of them -- earlier this year as the female voice on Gotye's Hot 100-topping "Somebody That I Used to Know." But that acoustic quirk-pop hit only hints at a bit of what Kimbra does on "Vows," her appealingly scattershot solo debut. It flits from jazzy electro-pop to muscular art rock to one tune that sounds like it was written for TLC's "CrazySexyCool." Pop &amp; Hiss caught up with the 22-year-old singer-songwriter at a Studio City cafe ahead of her shows Wednesday and Thursday at the Fonda Theatre.

  15. Southern California Close-Ups: From West Hollywood to Wilshire

Set an out-of-towner loose to roam the Los Angeles area between West Hollywood and Koreatown and what can you expect? A food-truck overdose, perhaps. Or the bold suggestion that we extend our subway system westward. (Hey, we're working on it.) Or maybe just your basic Asian-Russian-Latino-gay-vegetarian-barbecue-automotive-modernist-tar-pit-chili-dog weekend.

  19. A little Jack White with your burger?

Is a hyper-curated playlist the new house-made charcuterie? Whether a restaurant's playing Lady Gaga or Langhorne Slim says as much about the place as its Mason jar drinking glasses or farm-to-table pickle plate. And in an era when even Facebook tracks one's music choices, restaurants are paying more attention than ever to what goes with the hickory-roasted carrots &mdash; not just the <em>za'tar</em>-laced cr&egrave;me fra&icirc;che but, say, also Lambchop (the band, not the meat).
